REPÜLŐMÚZEUM  SZOLNOK

Ka-26

It's been called the world's ugliest helicopter. According to a less poetic description, it's like an aphid under an electron microscope.

The main thing, though, is that
she's in good condition.

She just beams sadness, perhaps because she'd rather be a high performance glider...

A Kamov-specialitás, a koaxiális rotor vezérlése. Megérteni sem könnyű, nemhogy kitalálni !

The Kamov specialty: the coaxial rotor.

Understanding it is hard, never mind inventing it!

No gyere kis törpe,

lássuk ki vagy !

44 kép következik.

Well, come on, little dwarf, let's find out who you are!

44 pictures follow.

A photo that belongs in a passport. It moves the imagination: is it an insect, or
just a sulky little girl with her two pigtails? Perfect for a cartoon character!

Néha nem is olyan csúnya !

Sometimes, it isn't even all that ugly.

Kettős orrfutó, egy pitot-cső.

Twin nosegear, one pitot tube.

Mintha Micsurin, a nagy orosz növénynemesítő keresztezte volna az összes létező repülőeszközt: mindegyikből örökölt valamit...

Fogd rám ha perverzió, de nekem tetszik !

It's as if Michurin, the infamous Russian agrotechnologist, had crossed every existing flying device: it has features from each.

Call it perversion if you want, but I like it!

Szóval itt a hátrányok adódnak össze.

In my childhood I thought it was a jet engine, but no: the nacelle conceals a 9-cylinder radial engine.
Radial engines are good for aircraft, as the airflow of flight can help to keep it cool.
Here, though, a separate ventilator (matching the performance of a small car) coolsthe large motor. What, one - two! In any case, the drawbacks are mounting up.

Innen repülőeszköznek látszik...

From this angle, she looks like a flying machine.

A kettős faroktartón vezérsíkok, bizarr formát alkotva.

Vertical and horizontal stabilisers on the twin tail make for a bizarre sight.

Mind a vízszintes, mind a függőleges vezérsíkon kormányfelületek is vannak, helikoptertől meglehetősen szokatlanul.

Nagyon szeretném tudni, hogyan használták őket?

Lebegésben például sehogyan - legalábbis úgy gondolom.

There are rudders and elevators, too, extremely unusually for a helicopter. I'd really like to know how they were used. I don't think they'd have been too useful in a
hover, for example.

Ez a nézet nagyon megtetszett.

Márpedig ilyen állat nincs is -illik rá.

A függőleges vezérsíkok nem párhuzamosak, befelé "csámpítanak".

This view has really grown on me. There's no animal that looks like this.

The vertical stabilisers aren't parallel - they're cambered inwards.

Felemelt ...

The camera raised...

... és földre tett fényképezőgéppel.

Nem jön, hanem megy !

Ahogy kinéz, akár erre is lehetne az eleje...

 ...and put down.

It's not coming, but going! But to judge from the appearance, this could be the front, too.

A bal függőleges vezérsík.

A kormányfelületek jól látszanak.

The portside vertical stabiliser. The rudder is well visible.

Amit itt látsz az mind-mind a Ka-26 helikopter...

Everything you see here belongs to the Ka-26.

A teljes farok.

Láttad sok évvel ezelőtt a debreceni nagyerdei csónakázótó partján a presszót?

The whole tail.

Many years ago, a cafe in Debrecen mounted a tail section like this onto the building, the
booms sticking out from the wall...

A jobb motorgondola a főfutóval.

The starboard nacelle and main gear.

A motorgondola is izgalmas formájú, két kipufogó-csonk áll ki belőle.

The nacelle has an intriguing shape, too, and two exhaust-stubs poke out of it.

Annyira nem csúnya, a "Csillagok Háborúja"-ban is roppant hasonlókat láthatunk.

It's not all that ugly - we saw similar shapes in "Star Wars" too.

A motorgondola szép nagy vállal csatlakozik a törzshöz. Ebben van elhelyezve a kb. vízszintes kardántengely, amelyen át a motor a teljesítményt a reduktorra adja át (mivel nincs farokreduktor, nincs miért  főreduktornak nevezni).

The nacelle is connected to the fuselage with a rather bulky "shoulder." This contains the almost horizontal driveshaft, through which the power of the engine is led into the transmission. Since there's no tail rotor, there's no need to call this the main transmission.

Someday I'll take a good look at the motor and the powertrain...

Egy egész alakos kép, profilból.

Not looking too bad from the side.

 A sztárfotók szögéből nézve.

From the angle of star photos.

Egy kipufogócsonk, a fülke alól jön ki.

An exhaust pipe emerging from under the cabin.

A fülke teteje és a törzs felső része.

The top of the cabin and the upper part of the fuselage.

Az orrfutók az egyetlen pitot-csővel.

The twin nosegear with the single pitot tube.

A rotoroktól sem könnyű szabadulni.

Nekem sem sikerült könnyen, azért látsz itt több képet is róluk.

It's hard to ignore the rotors, either.

At least I couldn't, that's why you'll see  several photos of it here.

Kicsit alulról.

A little from below.

Sidelit.

Have you ever thought of how the helicopter turns on its vertical axle in midhover?
The control surfaces are ineffective; the rotation of the rotors against each other are fixed by the cogs of the transmission. An idea jumps to mind: the control affects the common
position asymmetrically between the two rotors, causing one to have greater effect than the other rotating the opposite way, causing the aircraft to turn.

Or is this stupidity?

A felső rotoragy sem egyszerű ...

The upper hub isn't quite an exercise in simplicity...

...but the lower one even less so!

I think the last few photos capture the fruits of several thousand engineer-hours and a decade of experience.

A pilóta helye igen barátságos, a kilátás kitűnő.

The pilot's spot is quite friendly, the view out is excellent.

The pilot's spot is definitely friendly, but the view out, especially to the right, is not
excellent, because the box covers almost half the horizon. When cutting wires the pole was
almost always to the right, because of which it wasn't always obvious that there's a
cable in the air.

A botkormány.

Felül kapcsolók, alul a kerékfék karja.

The cyclic. Switches above, wheel brake below.

Az EVK.

The collective.

Az EVK-n is vannak kapcsolók.

Alul bájos a gázmarkolat tájékoztató felirata, balra nagyobb gáz, jobbra kisebb.

The collective has switches, too. The inscription on the bottom is cute: to the left, throttle opens, to the right, throttle closes.

It's good that it's there: if the pilot
happens to forget this in flight, at least he won't have to ask on the radio...

A lábpedálokról csak találgatom, hogyan fordítják a gépet.

I can only guess as to how the pedals might turn the helo.

Well, this is interesting. There's something pedallike in front of the mother-in-law seat. Is it a switch? If not, why's there only one?
The pedal at the mother-in-law seat is the switch for the internall communication"radio", which can be activated with the left foot. --Peter Szogyeni

A fő műszerfal.

The main instrument panel.

Kicsit közelebbről, táborizöld árnyékoló ponyvával.

From a bit closer, with an olive drab canvas shade.

A "műszerfal-szakáll" ...

The instrument panel's "beard."

... A felső részen a motorindítás kapcsolói, a többit sajnos nem értem.

A képaláírás szerinti motorindítás kapcsolók a két motor gyújtómágneseinek
a kapcsolói, középen a központi "lekapcsoló"-val.

 A tényleges motorindítási
kapcsolók/eszközök (spricni, levegőcsap) a két ülés közötti vízszintes
panelen találhatók, a következő képen.

Szögyéni Péter

The upper part has the switches for the engine, but I don't understand the rest.

The engine switches mentioned by the caption are the switches for the two engines'  magnetos, with the central "off" switch in the middle. The actual starter switches are on the horizontal panel between the two seats, on the following picture.

--Peter Szogyeni

A sárga karokat az üzemanyag-elzáróknak gondolom.

Lejjebb a sűrített levegő nyomásmérője és csapjai.

I take the yellow levers to be the fuel shut-off levers. Below, the air pressure gauge and its taps.

A kabintető a lábpedál felől nézve.

The cabin ceiling, viewed from the pedals.

A motorok leállító-karjai lehetnek?

A motorok leállító karjai helyett a két barna fogantyú a két motor és a
reduktorház közötti kuplungok karjai, a középső pedig a rotorfék.

Szögyéni Péter

Could these be the engine shut-off levers?

Not the shut-off levers, instead the two brown handles are the clutches for each engine, the middle lever is the rotor brake.

--Peter Szogyeni

A pilóta feje feletti műszerpanel.

The instrument panel above the pilot's head.

This is a gem, too: towards the (removable) passenger compartment, this little 30 cm
wide by 1 m high whatchamacallit opens. It's not a door, not a window, not a crossing (You
wouldn't fit through it, nevermind me...), and I can only guess as to its purpose.

Its for yelling through, and if that's not heard, for poking and pointing.

Oh yeah: the Mi-24 has one of these, too, just bigger.

Above the opening is a compass; I gather the main indicator is on the instrument panel.

Ugyanaz a nyílás, az utastér felől, alul felül rácsokkal bonyolítva a rejtély megfejtését.

The same opening from the passengers' side, with racks above and below to complicate
the riddle.

A lakályos utastér, hat személy részére.

The spacious cabin for six passengers.

Coat hooks, lace curtain... as if this weren't the same aircraft we saw outside!

2008. júniusa, ugyanitt folytatjuk.

Kezdik a gépet szétszedni, hogy Kecskemétre szállítsák újrafestésre.

June 2008, continuing from the same place. They're starting to dismantle the helo for transport to Kecskemet for repainting.

They've removed the cover from inside the passenger compartment, underneath
which is part of the control mechanism.

A rotortengely közepén átmenő vezérlőrúd bizonyára a kollektív állásszöget vezérli. Az oldalsó rúd már fogósabb kérdés...

The rod in the middle probably connects to the collective. The one on the side is a tougher question.

A baloldali motorgondola kinyitva.

The port nacelle, opened.

Ugyanaz kissé hátulról.

The same, from a bit further back.

Felmásztam a gép jobb elejénél lévő állványra. Jól láthatóak a motorgondola tartórúdjai és a motorból jövő hajtótengely egyik gumicsillapítású tengelykapcsolata is.

Az előtérben egy vezérlőrúd himbája.

I climbed up onto the platform near the right front of the helo. The nacelle supports are clearly visible, as is the rubber-dampened driveshaft.

Fent vagyunk a tetőn, a felső burkolat leszerelve.

We're up on th roof, the upper fairing removed. Through the round access hatch we can
see the same drive axle's other dampened connection. In front of it we can see that the drive assembly has been taken apart, its nuts and bolts sitting on the roof.

In the middle, that's probably the hydraulic pump and the oil tank, beside it on either side, the hydraulic servos of the control mechanism.

This pitlike space is between the flight deck and the passenger cabin, here's
where the   control rods from the flight deck lead through towards the control surfaces.

The cables on the pulleys are part of the engine controls, which are moved by the knife-handle-like handles on the roof. These cables control the rotor brake and the two axle switches.
